Malpas Debut Album: Rain, River, Sea out This Week

New York, NY:  UK duo Malpas debut full-length album Rain, River, Sea, is out this week via Killing Moon Records (with US distribution from Yebo Music.) The ‘folktronic’ album contains 10 tracks recorded between Birmingham and London with the collaboration all being shared over email. The second single from the album, ‘Where the River Runs’ has just won Steve Lamacq’s Rebel Playlist on BBC6 Music and the band is gearing to play the Reading/Leeds Festival next month. More dates and US plans to be announced soon including performances at The CMJ Music Marathon in New York City this coming October. For a live taste check the band’s performance on Sofar Sounds, recorded in London:

Malpas is songwriter Ali M. Forbes and producer Andy Savours. The sound of Malpas combines the hushed melancholy of Nick Drake and the euphoric soundscapes of early Aphex Twin with a dollop of Tears For Fears pop ambition and Beta Band lo-fi scratchiness added in. Malpas is about simple songs of love, loss, loneliness and finding freedom in the imagination and the juxtoposition of acoustic and electonic instrumentation makes for an all together innovative sound.

For Andy Savours, this is his first official venture out from behind the mixing desk, starting his career training under Alan Moulder and Flood at Assault and Battery, working on releases from The Horrors, Sigur Ros and The Killers before developing an impressive production resume of his own, making records with artists including The Pains Of Being Pure At HeartMy Bloody Valentine and Cloud BoatSavours is presently working in the studio with My Bloody Valentine on a project soon to be revealed.

“The synth-y baselines echo their way deep inside you, and the mandolins and acoustic guitar glisten like the blinking, sparkling, sun-catching eye, flitting around like nymphs on the vocal harmonies.”Drunken Werewolf

“They’ve delivered something with true global appeal” – Record of the Day

“Magical” – The Sun. That’s right, The bloody Sun.
