Matisyahu Review

AUSTIN- As I made my way up Red River Street to Stubb’s Friday night, it became evident that Matisyahu once again was performing a sold out show.  After doors opened the small room quickly filled to the brim with people anxiously waiting for him to take the stage.

Friday night’s show proved to be a bit unique.  Once on stage Matisyahu quickly sat down on the small Matisyahu-Stubbs-hires-6stool located front and center.  Taking in the energy from the crowd, he was completely silent for several moments as he glared into the horde of onlookers cheering him on.  He then introduced the other musicians that joined him on stage and quickly said, “I hope you enjoy this.  It’s a little different than what you might be used to.”

While there were a little reggae influences, the American Jewish musician played several songs off his newest album, Akeda.  Through religiously charged lyrics and intoxicating beatboxing, Matisyahu preformed a show that was anything but average and everything brilliant.  The entire crowd seemed to be captivated and energized with each passing song.

As the show came to a close, the small crowd pleaded for more.  It only proves that Matisyahu’s inability to play it safe by producing albums that incorporate wide varieties of creative and musical influences are working to his advantage.
