Roxy Roca, Continental Club, Austin
AUSTIN – It’s late at the Continental Club in Austin and the music is intoxicating. It’s like a perverted scene straight out of Animal House with a sold out crowd grinding to this funky Bama Tex Mex of a beat band, Roxy Roca. The horn section blowing you down as Christina, on drums, pounds you back into the rhythm. Lead vocalist, Taye Cannon twists you with a sound that can only be described as stuffing Bruno Mars, Otis Redding and James Brown into a cannon and firing into the crowd.
As you look around there is an unusual sight in the crowd. Not one cell phone is out taking pictures or tweeting the owner’s whereabouts. Roxy Roca has a grip so tight locked around everyone that it’s just a mash pit of grooving, grinding hip swinging as they jam the evening away.
