SPOTIFY AND GIRLS ROCK CAMP FOUNDATION PARTNER ON SCHOLARSHIP INITIATIVE

Spotify and Girls Rock Camp Foundation Partner on Scholarship Initiative

Girls Rock Camp Foundation (GRFC), which offers funding for the 50+ nonprofit Girls Rock Camps (GRC) around the United States, has partnered with music service Spotify to create Spotify Scholarships. These Spotify Scholarships will provide full tuition to 100+ girls from low-income families across 22 camps for summer 2016.

Girls who attend week-long GRC programs learn an instrument, form a band, and write an original song which they perform in a showcase at a live music venue – many campers’ first rock show ever. Audiences are treated to heart-rending and hard-rocking performances from campers who have created their own T-shirts, made zines, and chosen band names like The Kool Kids and The Sweet Tarts. Many camps also offer video production, recording and engineering, and music industry basics. Girls learn leadership skills and collaboration, building confidence that extends to every area of their lives.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    girls rock camp 2

“With barriers and double standards faced by female musicians, and the low numbers of women in executive, A&R and producer roles, programs like Girls Rock Camp offer a vital, foundational solution,” says Tara Perkins, GRCF Board Member. “We are so excited to have an industry leader like Spotify make such a commitment to supporting women in music”.

Spotify has partnered with GRC for the last several years, including providing scholarships at a local level in select cities and building an employee volunteer initiative with the camps.

GRCF’s supporters include board members Tegan and Sara, Beth Ditto, and Kathleen Hanna. GRCF’s recent Girls To The Front gala featured appearances by Haim, Hailee Steinfeld, Rachel Bloom, Miguel, Motown Records president Ethiopia Habtemariam, and Grammy-winning songwriters Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter.
